What it commemorates
On Madaraka Day, Kenya remembers the transfer of self-governing powers under colonial transition arrangements. It is distinct from Jamhuri Day, which marks independence and the republic.
How it is observed
Typical public features of national day celebrations can include a presidential address, ceremonies involving the Kenya Defence Forces and security services, cultural performances, and public broadcasts. The main national ceremony is often hosted in a designated venue, which in recent years has sometimes been rotated among counties to promote national cohesion. Exact programmes are announced each year.
Legal basis
National days are set out in the Constitution of Kenya. Public holiday observance for the day is also reflected in public holiday practice — see the national holidays page for gazetted days off.
